Stocksy, illustration by Stephanie Han Kim. People were using the social network to connect with friends, plan events and share pictures. Groups were mostly used the way that group chats are used today, where you create or join a group to talk to the same people regularly. The one thing all of these groups have in common? I left every one of them for the same reason. The first thing that alarmed me was that they asked multiple medical questions on a daily basis.
Users asking the same questions time after time. Did you know that Facebook groups have a search option? Did you know that no one in parenting groups ever searches before asking their particular version of a timeless classic? Did you know that even when someone kindly points to the search function when commenting on a post, members usually ask anyway? Everything on earth is made of chemicals. Water is a chemical, and humans are 70 percent water. Every group I joined was part of an ongoing quest to learn tips and tricks that would help me survive motherhood, but I ended up feeling defeated by what I saw.
My distaste for Facebook parenting groups has even bonded me to two neighbourhood moms—we have eight kids between us, so the support is crucial and flows all ways. With three kids of my own, I know the drill and need way less advice. Lavender essential oil is considered safe for children and babies, but I would not use it for an infant under 6 months. It is also important to realize that some individuals react poorly to lavender essential oil and break out in a rash where the oil touched their skin.
The two most common types of vaginal infections are Bacterial Vaginosis BV and yeast infections. Our bodies have a natural balancing of bacteria going on continually. Our birth canal naturally contains both helpful bacteria and smaller numbers of harmful bacteria and yeasts fungi.
In women, the result is often a yeast infection. Yogurt is loaded with good bacteria. The yogurt comes in as extra artillery.
And oohhhhh, the immediate relief of the cold thick yogurt on your skin is worth so much more than the 10 cents it cost to purchase that teaspoon of dairy. I would not apply it internally, like you would for a suppository, rather just as a liberal slathering externally.
Slap a pad on so that the moisture is sucked away from your body as it warms, and you may wish to rinse off any remaining yogurt after a few hours. Continue to treat externally with yogurt until your symptoms are completely gone. For me, this usually means applying the yogurt right before bed for nights in a row and rinsing off with warm water each morning. Avoid sugars while you are recovering from a yeast infection, as the sugar will feed the yeast and will weaken your immune system. Candida is also an example of excess yeast in the body.
In healthy women, the pH level of this part of the body is 3. Yogurt has a pH of 4. Bacterial Vaginosis is caused by harmful bacteria outnumbering the good bacteria. In order to correct this type of infection, the pH of the birth canal must be brought back down to a healthy range so that the good bacteria can regain control.
Yogurt alone is not usually enough to combat BV. So here you have them, in no particular order. Just like it did yesterday and the day before, your body will continue to work, work, work whether you are aware of its toil or not — but when you have the opportunity to learn how and why things are what they are, you will learn how to work with your body and not against it. Beginning more than a decade ago, an auto-immune illness rendered Elissa's body weakened and continually afflicted. The result has been a significant loosening of the illness's grip on Elissa's body that has not only given their family new life, but has expanded their ability to care for others as well.
She and Blake are now in the process of building their own homestead and intend to use it as a safe-haven for families and children in need. They think the novelty is fun and any clean up is easy.
I have never tried yogurt for diaper rash but it sounds like a great cloth diaper friendly solution. Mary Ann, that is a great idea! We will certainly try that for Little Boy Blue. He loves the tub — but he also loves to turn on the water, so I may need to get a little creative with other things to do in there. It may be a perfect time to play with his homemade finger paints! I have Applied yougurt internally before. Hi Kitty, I am glad you found something that worked for you!
I just want to clarify one thing that you mentioned, in case anyone reading the comments gets their hopes up too high.
As you said, there are many factors that contribute to the problem of yeast. Unfortunately, as much as we wish for one…. It is something that has to be kept in balance continually — which is a job that our bodies do actively on their own especially when we do not impose additional factors on it such as antibiotics, harsh chemicals, high sugars, etc.
But sometimes that yeast just gets too out of hand and we find ourselves with an infection. The more we know about how our bodies work, the better prepared we will be to stand behind it.. It sounds like you have done your part to keep that balance in check and avoid new infections Kitty!
Thank you for your comment — hopefully you have given a few women courage to try it out for themselves! After my daughter had a rash for a month or so, I finally rubbed plain extra virgin coconut oil on her red bottom.
The rash was gone in 24 hours! Thank you for sharing the tip Sarah — we will add this to our back pocket list of remedies! I love to learn about what God made for us to use and how to use it! I would wholeheartedly take the little stone cottage and soft plump Grammy body to go with it. He was so distressed that I had to give him a shower to wash it off.
Which is sad, he loves watermelon! Oh no, yikes Alissa! Oh Alissa, I am so sorry. I have two thoughts — but I also understand if you are not up to trying again with this method. It helped him get rid of the rash just the same as always, but I certainly had my radar up for what could have happened to cause him so much pain. I noticed that older yogurt makes him more uncomfortable initially, while fresh yogurt he has a relieved reaction.
Either way, he is fine and happy again within a minute or two. Also — whenever he has open wounds, I always apply lavender essential oil together with the yogurt, as it helps with pain relief from the wounds. I also try to start treating his rash before any sores come up, so we have only had to deal with open wounds a few times usually during weeks that I was too tired to make yogurt.
Lastly — as far as from my own experience.. I have very sensitive skin. Even ultra-sensitive baby wipes burn like hot needles on my skin! When I had a BV together with a yeast infection, I was so raw that my skin started becoming an open wound.
I applied the yogurt and for a good minute all I felt was burning! But I waited it out and by the time I had walked out to the kitchen it was all relief. Almost like a numbing feeling but in a cold, very comfortable way. I think this experience gave me the most insight into how my Little Boy felt when I started the yogurt way too late on a bleeding rash.
For me, the momentary pain was still worth the long term gain.. Maybe I should have put this information in the article to begin with.. Thanks Elissa, that is encouraging! I have been using coconut oil with a few drops of lavender, and that seems to help. I might give the yoghurt another try next week after I make some more, on a less-sore bottom. Will let you know how it goes! So glad the lavender and oil seem to be making some progress! Yes, please do let me know how things go.
I am really curious now about goats milk yogurt, as we are strongly considering getting nanny goats down the road. However, like one suggestion you gave for the diaper rashes…. I switched to cloth menstral pads. I made one other switch: I use cold pressed coconut oil instead naturally anti fungal and anti microbial.
Ahhhh best switch ever!!!
