And then you have rectal and vaginal formulations of marijuana as well. So wide variety of options. And then to answer your question about dosing really comes down to titration process. A lot of it has to do with the fact that marijuana is a fat-soluble substance, right? So some patients need higher doses.
Some patients need lower doses. They figure it out. But no, I, there are definitely patients that I have followed up with you to adjust the dosing. And so much to unpack in that, in that answer that you gave with regard to these different methods of consuming, is that what drives the method?
Is it driven by the patient preference? Because some are more, more effective for certain conditions than others.
Other times you can have like two or three methods that are effective. So, it comes down to a matter of patient preference. And it comes down to pricing as well. Some methods are a lot more expensive than others.
So those are the main factors that sort of is that boils down to. And we talked about the states where this is a recreational uses legal, do you know offhand like what those states are? What were we talking about? And then the eighth is the District of Columbia. So, a patient will come in, you know, you see them, they get presumably a script of some sort. And then guess what happens after that? You have to submit your paperwork.
Either you or your doctor have to submit your paperwork to the state and then the state will evaluate your file and then they will then issue a medical marijuana card. Now some states have sort of a temporary card that they issue in the interim. The vast majority of states do require a registry with the state.
And so is it actually you physically will not be allowed into that building or store? If you do not have that card. And uh, is there, is there any amazon waiter do this online yet or is it all just physical location at this point? You mean in terms of purchasing products? You know, interestingly enough, California seems to have a lot of loopholes in its laws.
And so, there are some places that do actually do deliver by a courier service. And in order to open this kind of practice, what is required? Do you have to be a physician, an MD or a DO? Do you need to have an active medical license, residency training? There was a point where a lot of physicians got grandfathered into emergency medicine.
I imagine it depending on what direction this sort of field takes. And I think it has incredible medical application. Um, so there is no formal training. I mean, everything that I know is, is from hanging out in pub med for like hours since back in like So I am constantly reading a medical studies.
And then I am, I am seeing how it plays out clinically. So, there are definitely specific conditions where I have not had success in conditions of chronic pain. So let me give you two examples. Same with severe cases of spinal stenosis. Very a small, small amount of research in humans. Nothing conclusive that you can say from this research. Oh yeah, for sure. What do you say to the critics out there who are saying you know what, this is just a way to profit off of all those people who just want to use a pot or just kind of gaming the system using this, you know, this kind of loophole to go ahead and do that.
So, every patient that walks into my office, the one thing that they always tell me is Dr. I have this condition. Nothing is working and I just, I need an, a solution to my problem. With regards to the financial side of this. What are your thoughts on this from a, you know, from an industry standpoint, an acceptance kind of going forward and beyond.
And so if you think about it, this no one medicine has the potential to replace a lot of commonly prescribed a pharmaceutical drugs. And if you think about it, that the pharmaceutical industry is an industry of a multi billions of dollars.
And do you see that playing out with the opioid crisis obviously is, has been huge in medicine in the last year or so. Um, so do you see that as a, did you see this as a potential solution for that crisis as well? And in fact, I previously I mentioned that the studies showed that patients were able to reduce the doses of their opioids, not even just opioids, but actually antidepressants, anxiety medications, anticonvulsants which are commonly prescribed for pain.
Not only that, but I have, I have a lot of patients that are able to eliminate the use of these medications completely and just manage their pain with the use of medical marijuana. So, is it solution to the opioid epidemic? And now just kind of flipping the switch a little bit and thinking about physicians out there who might be thinking about incorporating this medical model into their practice or maybe even as a practice alternative, what advice would you give to doctors out there considering this type of practice?
I would give the same advice that my attendings have given me when I was training time and time again, which is know your medicine, right? So dig deep into the research in pub med. Nothing, I definitely got the sense that I was never the type of person who wanted to just clock in and clock out and not sort of really take into account the depth of my actions on the life of other people.
I mean, I can tell you for a fact today that I practice as a doctor exactly how I want to practice. One resource that I would recommend to listeners. So I should have brought this up. And basically, their question is Dr. Patel, how do I say use medical marijuana? So in an effort to reach more people and impact more lives. And is there any limitation as far as where the patient is located, where you see them or how does that work?
Does that make sense? Kind of at the end of that visit, do they still get this medical marijuana card or is it, they have to now obtain that in a way? So they have to obtain it in a different way. So it would definitely be a tropical island somewhere on the beach. OK, well where can people reach you if they want to get in touch with you? And I have a lot of what I do on my YouTube channels.
I answered a lot of commonly asked questions that people have about medical marijuana and just marijuana in general. And I also am constantly responding to comments on my YouTube channel. So if anybody in your audience has questions for me, there are more than welcome to post them in the comments section there. Thank you for listening to Doctors Unbound podcast.

Dave Including how she ended up opening a marijuana practice. Dave Welcome to another episode of the Doctors Unbound podcasts. Patel Thank you for having me.
And then how about a favorite food or drink? What is that for you? Patel So couple of years ago I stopped eating sugar and carbs, so I thrive on protein. Dave Are you following a particular type of diet or is it just cutting out the sugar and the carbs? Patel Cutting out the sugar and the carbs? Dave The crashes that you typically see after a big carb load.
Dave So you started, did you, did you respond to the ad and then start working for one of these clinics? Patel Yeah, I did. Dave And can you give us some details about your practice now?
Dave Maybe if we could go through maybe one of your most typical diagnosis and what that encounter looks like, you know, and maybe even some of the specifics like you were talking about how, you know, how you prescribed the marijuana and the kind of the thought process that goes into that. Besides abusing Williams' name and reputation, Isaac's companies charged customers' credit cards repeatedly after initiating a "free trial" of CBD products, and made it difficult for customers to reach the company to stop the charges, according to the complaint and an article on RipoffReport.
Isaac's three companies, Advanceable Technologies, Beauty Strong, and Snowflake Marketing, are each registered to a mailbox company in Scottsdale. They are, in fact, calculated to prey on vulnerable consumers, many of whom have chronic illness or other disabilities," Williams' spokesman Jonathan Franks said in a statement sent to the media.
Isaac denies the accusations , blaming the problems on other people who created the website ads. His company sells the products by accepting referrals from the "affiliates" who make the ads, he said. The affiliated marketers "need to grab attention" with the ads they make, he said.
But when customers press the order button, "then it comes to me. Last month, he stopped doing business with one affiliate who was "doing Montel Williams" ads, Isaac said, adding that he laments that "people are going to think I'm doing it. In fact, Isaac trashed his name years ago. New Times has previously written about the former weightlifter's rise and fall.
In , Isaac set a world record: He was the first man to ever bench-press pounds, a feat covered at the time by Sports Illustrated. New Times profiled him in an article in The son of a preacher, Isaac would occasionally volunteer at state juvenile detention facilities, proselytizing to incarcerated youth as he demonstrated weightlifting techniques. New Times also reported Isaac's conviction in for selling a Viagra-type drug without prescriptions, cheating on his taxes, and fraudulently obtaining government benefits.
He received a five-year prison sentence and was released in The complaint by Williams doesn't mention a company by that name. He has 15 employees at his Phoenix warehouse, he said, and dozens more customer-service workers. He declined to reveal an address for the business. To make his products, he first obtains CBD-containing oil in gallon barrels.
The company puts the product into small, 1-ounce bottles and labels them. He tests the product "probably once a month" to ensure quality, he claimed. He declined to say where he obtains the wholesale oil. Isaac said he intends to defend himself vigorously against the lawsuit with the help of a local attorney. Besides being nailed for selling the Chinese sexual-enhancement drug, Isaac and his father, Donald Isaac, had been involved in another venture called Pharmazone.
