  • The top growth markets restaurant brands look to when expanding their restaurant unit count. While it's common to look at the nation's top markets for restaurant expansion, there is value in evaluating smaller, but still promising markets. Today, we're taking a look at some of the fastest growing restaurant markets in the US and sharing key indicators you can look for in identifying.

    & Markets Restaurants

Either can be found in bars and cafes at meal times or in dedicated sites, sometimes with seating and service at a counter. British cafes and American diners are informal eateries offering a range of hot meals and made-to-order sandwiches or rolls. Many cafes are open at breakfast time and will serve full hot breakfasts all day. In some areas, cafes offer outdoor seating. A cafeteria is a restaurant serving ready-cooked food arranged behind a food-serving counter.

There is no table service. Typically, a patron takes a tray and pushes it along a track in front of the counter. Depending on the establishment, servings may be ordered from attendants, selected as ready-made portions already on plates, or self-serve their own portions. Cafeterias are common in hospitals, corporations and educational institutions. In Italy it's very common and known as "mensa aziendale".

In the UK, a cafeteria may also offer a large selection of hot food and the use of the term cafeteria is deprecated in favour of self-service restaurant. Cafeterias have a wider variety of prepared foods.

For example, it may have a variety of roasts e. Coffeehouses are casual restaurants without table service that emphasize coffee and other beverages; typically a limited selection of cold foods such as pastries and perhaps sandwiches are offered as well.

Their distinguishing feature is that they allow patrons to relax and socialize on their premises for long periods of time without pressure to leave promptly after eating, and are thus frequently chosen as sites for meetings. A destination restaurant is one that has a strong enough appeal to draw customers from beyond its community. A greasy spoon is a colloquial term for a British cafe , American diner or other small eatery which tends to serve food at a low cost.

Generally fried foods are served, and in the United Kingdom, such places frequently serve all-day breakfasts and strong builder's tea. They are commonly found in working-class areas. Customers are seated as in a casual dining setting. Food items are prepared by the establishments for cooking on embedded gas stoves , induction cookers , or charcoal grills ; the customer has control over the heating power of the appliance. Despite the name, the Mongolian barbecue form of restaurant is not Mongolian, rather is derived from Taiwan and inspired by Japanese teppanyaki [ citation needed ].

Customers create a bowl from an assortment of ingredients displayed in a buffet fashion. The bowl is then handed to the cook, who stir-fries the food on a large griddle and returns it on a plate or in a bowl to the consumer.

Traditionally, pubs were primarily drinking establishments with food in a secondary position, whereas many modern pubs rely on food as well, to the point where gastropubs are often known for their high-quality fine-dining style pub food and concomitantly high prices. A typical pub has a large selection of beers and ales on tap. Many restaurants specializing in Japanese cuisine offer the teppanyaki grill, which is more accurately based on a type of charcoal stove that is called shichirin in Japan.

Diners, often in multiple, unrelated parties, sit around the grill while a chef prepares their food orders in front of them. Often the chef is trained in entertaining the guests with special techniques, including cracking a spinning egg in the air, forming a volcano out of differently-sized onion slices, and flipping grilled shrimp pieces into patrons' mouths, in addition to various props.

Considering the high price and strong flavor, a little bit of this powder goes a long way. Though not as popular as feta cheese in Greece, graviera cheese is great in saganaki. Greek people eat more cheese per capita than any other country including France. To us, the brew is strong, muddy and filled with grinds. But what about the coffee situation in Athens?

These are our favorite coffee shops in Athens:. Away from the maddening crowds, taf is just a short walk from touristic Monastiraki. No flash in the pan, taf has been open since This leader in the Athens coffee scene offers a variety of beans from Africa and Central America which customers enjoy in various coffee drinks from flat whites to cappuccinos.

If you love the beans, you can buy some to enjoy later in Athens or you can pick some up in global cities like London, Singapore and Milan. Grab some souvlaki at Lefteris O Politis before or after you get your coffee at taf. This excellent souvlaki shop is just a five-minute walk from taf. Open since , Mr. Bean serves the gamut of third wave coffee options including flat whites, cappuccinos and pour overs in a corner property with floor-to-ceiling windows.

In proper third wave tradition, the team at Mr. Bean roasts beans sourced from South America and Africa at a facility outside the city center. The flat whites at Mr. Bean are classic third wave coffee drinks with their single sourced beans and latte art.

Bean on your Athens coffee crawl. This coffee shop is located down the block from taf. This spot on St. Irene square in Monastiraki is one of our favorite spots for drinking top quality, 3rd wave beans. Tailor Made offers an expansive menu of coffee options. They even offer an iced version of a flat white called a Flat White Freddo — a necessary menu item on hot Athens summer days. Beyond its commitment to quality coffee, Tailor Made is also a great social scene that transforms into a cocktail lounge at night.

This, to us, was a double win. Stop by Kostas for souvlaki when you visit Tailor Made. The popular stand is literally next door. A cool alleyway location makes this Syntagma area coffee shop a popular choice for both tourists and locals. The coffee shop offers espresso drinks to filtered options and roasts their beans onsite.

Peek a Bloom is located down an alley from a couple other adjacent cafes. Peek a Bloom is located at Lekka 14, Athina We stumbled upon Kudu Coffee Roasters while walking around the Gazi neighborhood. Before long, we were sitting in the shi-shi coffee shop and enjoying an iced latte. The thoroughly modern coffee shop prepares coffee using the latest extraction methods and offers cupping and brewing classes for its customers.

Serious coffee drinkers can take an hour barista workshop at Kudu. You can find the beans at coffee shops like Small 8 in the Pagrati neighborhood. If you learn one Greek word when you visit Athens, that word should be Yamas. Here are some great places to practice your new Greek vocabulary:.

Inspired by its famous New York namesake, Chelsea Hotel is a popular Pagrati cafe that serves drinks to throngs of people during the day and night. Crowds literally spill from the cozy cafe into the street every evening. If you think that there are no young people in Pagrati, a visit to Chelsea Hotel will prove you wrong in spades.

The atmosphere is chill though you may not be able to find a spot to sit. Wander over to Elvis for souvlaki when you get hungry. The popular Gazi souvlaki shop has a second location in Pagrati. We chose to drink at the bar where we ironically met a couple from our hometown. Yes , it is a small world after all. We ordered a Mediterranean Gimlet from the Playroom, the experimental section of the menu. Made with Star of Bombay gin and Greek salad, a tomato water with cucumber, red pepper, olives, oregano, salt and sugar, the sweet and savory drink tasted completely of place.

Check out the menu even if you know what you want to order. Located on the top floor of the Herodion Hotel and popular with both locals and tourists, Point A provides the ultimate Athens rooftop bar experience. Thanks to its prime locations, guests have unobstructed views of both the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. We dare you to find a better rooftop view at an Athens bar. Though not available during our visit, these creative cocktails combine cocktails and tapas all in one glass.

Point A also offers a complete dinner menu. You could take a wine course to learn about Greek wine or you can educate yourself by drinking your way through the wine list at Heteroclito. Start your education by drinking wines from Athens, Crete and Santorini before progressing to reds from Peloponnese and Macedonia. Whether you sit inside the cute wine bar or outside on the pedestrian street, you can and should enjoy a dish or two with your wine We opted for the Montreal, a plate filled with ham from northern Greece, dry Anthotiro cheese and barley rusks.

The wine bar also serves Greek craft beer and ouzo. Kiki de Grece serves a wide selection of Greek wine near Syntagma Square. The menu features a varied selection of well-priced wine options plus interesting snacks made with Greek ingredients. Despite the better name, the other bar completely turned us off. So, wanting to experience Greek beer, we headed to Barley Cargo and hoped for the best.

Then when we went inside, we entered a happy place filled with great beer and a cool decor. Our only issue at Barley Cargo was that there were too many beer options on draught — if there is such a thing. We narrowed our choices to the Chios Smoked Robust Porter 6. Order a draught beer tasting if you want to try four different Greek beers. The tasting comes with four small glasses of draught beer. This pannacotta was a surprise dessert during our pizza meal at Tre Sorelle. If you like dessert at the end of your meals, then Athens is your city.

During our month in Athens, we sometimes picked cafes or bakeries specifically for their desserts. These are our favorite places to eat dessert in Athens:. Walk to Athinaika Galatompoureko Triantafillou and try the best baklava in Athens.

The flaky dessert, steeped in honey, with infinite layers of filo pastry layered with nuts hits all the right notes. Sized for one person but big enough to share, this baklava is worth a special trip. The walk will burn off some of the calories. We rarely say no to cheesecake topped with cherries like the one we found at Ohh Boy. A thoroughly modern cafe in Athens, Ohh Boy serves a selection of desserts as well as coffee and other beverages.

During our first visit, we enjoyed cheesecake with a side of internet. For our return visits, we opted for flat whites, also with internet on the side. Bring your laptop to Ohh Boy. The cafe has some of the fastest internet upload speeds we encountered in Athens.

Chatzes prepares rice pudding with buffalo milk, not a common occurrence in Greece. The pastry shop makes a variety of items with buffalo milk, but the rice pudding is the dish to try. Loukoumades are one of the most ancient desserts in all of Greece. Despite their age, these addictive sweet bites taste totally modern and are a must to try during a visit to Athens. The centrally located shop is nothing fancy and feels like a cafeteria. Reminiscent of American donuts, these loukoumades are simple rounds of dough soaked in orange blossom honey and topped with cinnamon.

We ate a lot of good ice cream in Athens. Our favorite scoops were at Sorolop. Sorolop, located in edgy Exarcheia, ranks as our favorite ice cream shop in Athens. The nearby graffiti is an added bonus. Sorolop also offers a great mix of sorbets and ice cream options like Stevia Chocolate and Lime Sorbet with Basil.

After enjoying your ice cream at Sorolop take a stroll around Exarcheia and enjoy incredible street art and shopping — think Brooklyn meets Athens. The gelato at Le Greche is worth a stop. This Athens gelateria uses locally sourced ingredients in its recipes. Le Greche makes their gelato from the finest local ingredients like lemons from Argos, pistachios from Sicily and ricotta from Crete.

As for us, we enjoyed two scoops — Gelato a la Greche lightly flavored with lemon zest and Amarena Cherry. As the birthplace of democracy, Athens has a lot of history to explore.

Here are some ideas to get you started:. Check out where to eat the best Athens souvlaki. In addition to staying in an Airbnb apartment , we were guests at two hotels in Athens and recommend them both. You can also click here to research the best rates for hotels in Athens Greece. Then click here to arrange car service from the airport to your hotel.

Street art abounds in neighborhoods like Exarchia and Metaxourgeio. Everybody walks in Athens — even soldiers.

Can you blame us for missing the entrance to Diporto? Yamas to Mitsos for making us feel at home at his taverna Diporto. This version of saganaki included feta cheese and mussels.

Kolouri stalls fill the streets of central Athens early in the day. The kourou cheese pie at Ariston is an Athens classic. Could there be a more classic street food than meat on a stick?

We were not disappointed. Budget time to walk to Meripaviljonki. Add in a tragically hipster vibe and it all sounds too ironic to be true. Think again — this bbq joint is serving top-notch dishes like spare ribs and hot wings. We became believers after sharing a plate of the glazed Finnish pork spare ribs seasoned Finnish style with paprika, chili and cinnamon. Thanks to B-Smokery, barbecue in Helsinki is for real. The restaurant is vegetarian-friendly with meatless options.

As it turns out, burgers are very popular in Finland, with chains like Burger King dotting the city whether you want to find them or not. Is Herlevi serving the best burger in Helsinki? Watch our YouTube video and see for yourself. As huge fans of pizza in Naples , we were skeptical about the quality of pizza in Helsinki. Though we really liked the Silence of the Lambs pie topped with flavorful ingredients like lamb and North African spices, it was the Baltic themed Arctic Char pie that made our taste buds sing with its fresh fish, fennel and mascarpone toppings.

You can eat pepperoni or mushroom pizza back home. Some of the best places to eat in Helsinki are actually cafes, but this is nothing new. Day and night, the best cafes are filled with people talking, drinking and eating in Helsinki. Here are our favorites. For the uninitiated, this buttery, soft, Finnish version of the cinnamon bun is flavored with cardamom and is best paired with coffee. Fleruiste is a delightful respite from the busy city and should not be missed. Open since , Cafe Ekberg is a Helsinki tradition with wonderful pastries and a banging breakfast buffet.

In addition to its menu items, the casual Helsinki cafe serves hearty breakfast and lunch buffets with plenty of sweet and savory options. Be sure to try the salty black licorice, one of our favorite things to eat in Helsinki. Buy some extra chocolate to give as gifts.

There are no better Helsinki souvenirs than edible souvenirs. The stalls at Hakaniemi Market Hall sell all kinds of local foods for the masses. Is the extra cost worth it? Filled with character and characters, Hakaniemi Market Hall provides a wealth of photo opportunities for food travel photographers. Popular with both locals and tourists, Kauppatori Market Square is a great spot to buy seasonal food in Helsinki Finland that you can enjoy on the spot or later.

This market also sells local crafts, making it a one-stop souvenir destination. Though the market comes alive during the warm summer months, the market is a year-round destination and always features seasonal products. Tired of hamburgers and pizza? Kauppatori Market Square is a great spot to try genuine Finnish fare in a casual setting.

The food hall underneath the Stockmann department store is one of the best places to shop in Helsinki. A modern department store housed in an iconic Art Nouveau building, the Stockmann department store is a mandatory destination for anybody who chooses to visit Helsinki — especially food lovers.

The centrally located department store is just steps away from the train station. Though the winter days are short in Helsinki, the Christmas markets make them extra special.
